Safety policies should be implemented across fleets, says IAM

Road safety techniques should be encouraged across entire fleets, according to one industry group.

The driver training firm IAM Commercial has pledged its support to a department for transport (DfT) scheme which aims to crack down on reckless motoring in the fleet industry.

The move comes in the wake of new government documentation aiming to implement consistent safety policies throughout the entire industry.

Seb Goldin, managing director of IAM, said: "Company driving policies should outline a company's stance on all of the key road safety issues highlighted in the government consultation document.

"Risk assessments should consulted on a regular basis to ensure factors as seasonal changes in road conditions and changes in role requirements are addressed and the appropriate training provided."

Company road safety assessment programmes can not only ensure the wellbeing of drivers on the road, but can also help secure cheap van insurance policies across entire fleets.

Earlier this month, the Freight Transport Association announced that it had struck an agreement with the DfT to ensure that haulage training would remain flexible.
