New Research on Road Safety

Benchmarking study to improve work-connected road safety.

New research undertaken over the past three years concludes that despite the huge potential for benchmarking to help managers effectively monitor, improve and evaluate work-related road safety, poor and incomparable data has been a recurring barrier in almost every benchmarking project to date.

The 22 page report summarises the background, content and next steps for the work-related road safety benchmarking project, which aims to provide a useful, long term and sustainable fleet program for the UK – to allow meaningful comparisons of management processes, collision rates and costs to identify areas for improvement at the organisational and policy levels.

The Fleet Safety Benchmarking project, funded by the Department for Transport, allows companies to anonymously compare their fleet safety procedures and crash data with that of other companies, to help them identify potentially life-saving improvements.

By logging on to the project website www.fleetsafetybenchmarking.net fleet managers can straight away: find out why crash analysis and benchmarking is so important to running a safe fleet access; best practice case studies about other fleet operators; download a free guidance sheet by the Fleet Safety Forum on reporting and recording crash data; complete a quick 10-question self-audit to identify any gaps in their fleet safety processes and policies; and

sign up to the Fleet Safety Benchmarking Group free of charge.

Free electronic copies of the report are available on the website www.fleetsafetybenchmarking.net . (Click on the ‘non-members’ button and the report is downloadable from the right hand side).
